About the Event

Have you always wanted to keep a few goats but wonder where to start and how much work is involved? Or would you just like to enjoy the experience of finding out more about these appealing animals? Read More...

Goats were among the earliest domesticated animals, dating back around 10,000 years but goats tend to get forgotten when we think of livestock nowadays. Yet goat milk and goats milk products are now on sale in most supermarkets and there’s a growing market for goat meat, which has various health benefits.

On this half day course, you’ll hear about everything from goat breeds to goat welfare and behaviour.  The course will be led by Kate Henderson, FarmED’s Agricultural Lead, who has kept goats for 12 years and owns FarmED’s resident goats, which you’ll get a chance to meet.

Find out about:

  • Getting your goat - how to prepare to keep goats
  • Choosing and sourcing goats
  • Goat breeds
  • Rearing goats for milk or meat
  • Feeding and breeding
  • Shelter and fencing including NoFence collars
  • Legislation affecting goat ownership
  • Goat health
  • Hoof trimming
  • Goat behaviour
  • A year in the life of a goat

This course is suitable for you if you:

  • Are a smallholder interested in finding out more about keeping a few goats.
  • Just want to enjoy the experience of learning about goats.

At the end of the course you’ll enjoy a seasonal lunch in the FarmED Cafe.
