About the Event
Join local craftsman, Joe Southeard for a talk about the meditative art of spoon carving, as he takes us through the process of turning a freshly felled log into a beautifully finished spoon, with just a few basic hand tools. Read More...It was during lockdown 2020, researching forest school ideas for his children, that Joe stumbled upon the curiously addictive art of spoon carving. The craft is enjoying something of a renaissance and, as a former furniture designer and maker, Joe quickly discovered a natural affinity and passion for it.
Join us to hear from Joe about the therapeutic benefits of this wonderful pastime and discover the simple pleasure of creating everyday objects of use from natural materials, by hand.
There will be practical demonstrations throughout the talk with an explanation of the materials and tools involved, and tips to get started if you are considering a new hobby. There will also be a chance to ask questions and to handle some of Joe’s work.
About the speaker:
Having grown up in nearby Chipping Norton, Joe Southeard now lives in rural Buckinghamshire with his wife and 3 young boys. Recognition for his carving is growing as he moves from amateur enthusiast to professional greenwood worker. Some of Joe’s products (butter knife, jam spoon, honey dipper) are now available in the FarmED Cafe.
Please arrive at 11:45 am. The talk will start at midday, and lunch will be served at 1:00 pm.
