About the Event
Discover our orchard when it's at it's peak of beauty - in blossom! Read More...The trees in our heritage orchard were planted about 10 years ago and are now beginning to bear fruit. Of the 260 trees in the orchard, we have about 100 different apple varieties as well as pears, plums, gages, damsons, cherries, and even a few quince, mulberry, walnut, apricot, nectarine, and peach. Blossom time starts in March with the early plums and finishes in May.
This year come and enjoy the apple blossom as well as the pollinating insects attracted to the orchard. Join Christine and Alex on a walk and talk around the orchard looking at the differences in the blossom, the progression of flowering dates, tip and spur blossom, about pollination itself, the origins of apple varieties, the effects of winter/summer pruning, how to prune young trees, the effect of rootstock on size of tree.
Alex Dye is FarmED's public engagement coordinator. With a background in entomology, he has been keeping an eye on the insect species found on Honeydale farm and will be on hand to look at what's buzzing in the orchard.
Tickets will include a delicious and nutritious lunch, freshly prepared in the FarmED kitchen.
