About the Event

What would it take for dairy goats to become a mainstay of the British regenerative farming movement? Read More...
Dairy goats have been farmed in Britain for many centuries, but due to a combination of economic, social and climate factors they have been pushed to the margins of the British farming landscape and are something of a forgotten farm animal. With the growing popularity and quality of British goats cheese though, is there now an opportunity for dairy goats to make a comeback? And could their versatility and adaptability as a species make them a perfect complement to the regenerative farming approaches becoming popular in Britain?

Rachel Yarrow thinks the answer is yes, but has learnt the hard way that there are no end of challenges to succeeding at pasture-based farming with dairy goats in the UK - and no handy rule book to follow!

In this talk she will share some of the ups and downs of her 10 year journey as a goat farmer and cheesemaker and what she has learnt about the potential of dairy goats to succeed in regenerative farming - and what will need to happen if that is to become a reality. She will also share insights from her recent travels as a Nuffield scholar, studying dairy goat farms in France, Norway and the Netherlands.

About the speaker
Rachel and her husband Fraser Norton have a herd of 200 dairy goats in Oxfordshire and own Norton & Yarrow Cheese, and have won many awards for their cheeses, including Best British Cheese at the World Cheese Awards in 2023.

Please arrive at 11:45 am. The talk will start at midday, and lunch will be served at 1:00 pm.

After the talk, you will get a freshly prepared, nutritious lunch from the FarmED cafe where you will be able to network with other guests.
