The climate is undeniably shifting, and with it, dairy farming in the UK faces a host of new challenges. Yet, within these challenges lie significant opportunities for innovation and growth. The intersection of sustainable and climate-resilient dairy farming presents a unique duality of concerns that demand our attention.

In this talk, Hattie McFadzean, a Nuffield Scholar with an academic background in climate science and a dedicated career in sustainable dairy farming, will delve into these critical issues. Hattie will explore how climate projections for the UK are set to impact dairy farming practices, and what this means for the future of the industry.

We'll take a close look at the specific threats posed by climate change, such as drought resilience, heat stress, increased flooding, and the changing prevalence of pests and diseases. Importantly, this analysis will also consider how the UK's current dairy farming systems can monitor and enhance their resilience in the face of these challenges.

We'll also examine how certain adaptation practices might not only be reactive but regenerative, contributing to a more sustainable and robust farming ecosystem. Where do the concepts of climate resilience and sustainability intersect, and where might they diverge? This talk will seek to answer these questions, providing a comprehensive overview of how the dairy industry can adapt and thrive in an era of climate uncertainty.

About the speaker:
