About the Event

Join us as we celebrate the fruit from our heritage orchard, including apple refreshments & a delicious lunch.

This is your chance to taste and learn about some of our 200 varieties, from Oxford Beauty and Blenheim Orange to Eynsham Dumpling and Dog's Snout.

There will be talks about apples, apple identification, cider making, and a chance to explore the orchard and take part in an orchard Treasure Hunt. You will have the opportunity to taste FarmED's first batch of cider made on Apple Day last year.

The winner of the Treasure Hunt will win not only get a copy of the book, "Orchard: A Year in England’s Eden" by Benedict Macdonald and Nicholas Gates, they will also win a free ticket to Farming 2050 to hear them talk about their new documentary "Hungry for Change" on the 26th October at FarmED.

We will be joined by Christine Elliott, a locally well-known apple enthusiast, passionate about heritage apple varieties. As part of the Kitchen Garden People, at FarmED, Christine selected the 180 fruit trees planted in 2021/22 in the agroforestry strip between the vegetable growing spaces. She will talk about apples, how we can enjoy the wide variety of apples from our gardens, how to identify apples, and how to make cider from fallen apples.

If you want to get apples from your garden identified with the help of Christine please bring the following:

  • 3 apples that are representative of the rest of the apples on the tree, and not from the end of a cluster/branch
  • A twig with a few leaves from the tree
  • Rough date when ripe apples started falling off the tree (if they ripened before October please keep them in the fridge before coming)
  • Idea of when the tree would have been planted

This event is suitable for non-expert apple enthusiasts, those interested in planting apple trees, and those who enjoy spending time outside learning about nature. Families and children are welcome.

Tickets will include a delicious and nutritious lunch, freshly prepared in the FarmED kitchen.
